Anatomy class performance has been shown to be negatively correlated with students' performance on standardized exams and with their self-assessment of knowledge, skills, and attitudes. Over the past decade, a number of studies have shown that introducing smaller-group assessments throughout the course improves learning and affects students' self-assessment of their knowledge and skills. This study examined the impact of introducing a student-run large-group assessment (i.e., cohort assessment) in anatomy classes. Cohort assessments are student-run assessments occurring at the end of a cohort module that gather information about each student's ability to apply knowledge to new problems and to their ability to think critically about problems. The value of cohort assessments was examined in two anatomy classes at an urban, private college in the fall of 2008. Students were surveyed before (N = 92) and after (N = 86) participation in cohort assessments. There was a significant difference in pre- and posttest scores on the Mini Concept Inventory on the Internal Determinants of Scientific Reasoning, a short-answer question–based multiple-choice pre/posttest. There was also a significant correlation between students' performance on the latter and their performance on the pre/posttest. Students' self-assessment was consistent with their pre/posttest scores, as there was a significant increase in the proportion of students who reported that their mastery of anatomical concepts was "very good" or "excellent." Moreover, students reported higher levels of satisfaction with their coursework after participating in the cohort assessments. The results of this study suggest that cohort assessments may be an effective way to identify students' strengths and weaknesses and to enable them to improve their grades. Moreover, the ability of individual students to make meaningful contributions to the assessment of their peers increased, which, in turn, led to increased student satisfaction with the course.
